April 25, 2015: Nepal quake kills more than 1,000 and spreads terror on Everest

“More than a thousand people were killed by a powerful earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday. The earthquake – which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale – wrecked houses, levelled centuries-old temples and triggered avalanches on Mount Everest.”

“A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake has hit 40 kilometers off the New Zealand town of Kaikoura, GeoNet reported. Witnesses described feeling tremors all across central regions of the country.”

April 23, 2015: Chile’s Mt. Calbuco volcano erupts for first time in over 40yrs

“Southern Chile’s Calbuco volcano has erupted for the second time in a day, after being dormant for about half a century. More than 5,000 people were evacuated from the sparsely populated area about 1,000km south of the capital Santiago and near the tourist town of Puerto Varas.” (Al Jazeera)

January 21, 2015: New island created in Tonga volcanic eruption

“A volcanic eruption taking place in the Pacific archipelago of Tonga has created a new island.” … “The island, which has not yet been named, is around 1.8 kilometers by 1.5 kilometers and rises around 100 meters above the sea.” …”When the volcano stops erupting, the ocean will likely erode the Island in just a few months, as it is made mainly of loose scoria and not lava, which is much more durable.”
