The European Council meeting in Brussels on 14-15 December took the “historic decision” to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, the Swedish Government writes in a press release. The EU summit was attended by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
“We have now agreed in the European Council to open negotiations on the future EU membership of Ukraine and Moldova. This is an important political signal that their long-term place is in the EU.
It is very gratifying that we can give this message to President Zelenskyj and the Ukrainian people who are now fighting for their and our freedom,” said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The leaders decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, to grant candidate country status to Georgia, subject to certain measures, and to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina as soon as it meets the necessary criteria for membership.
