Sweden has long punched above its weight in tech, producing global names such as Spotify and Klarna. A new generation of companies is now drawing fresh attention, positioning the country as one of Europe’s hottest startup hubs.
Legal AI startup Legora and “vibe-coding” tool Lovable are among the latest names turning heads. Health-tech company Neko Health and autonomous freight firm Einride are also part of the current wave.
Sophia Bendz, a general partner at Cherry Ventures and a former Spotify executive, says the cultural shift is central. A decade ago, ambitious graduates often aimed for banking or consulting. Today, she argues, more people optimize for building companies, chasing both freedom and wealth. “Being a founder is actually cool,” she told TechCrunch’s Equity podcast.
The numbers back the momentum. Swedish startups have raised about $2.8 billion so far this year, according to Dealroom, with projections of at least $5 billion by year-end. That follows $3.2 billion last year. The peak remains 2021’s $8.5 billion, a product of a much hotter global venture market that later cooled and is now warming again.
Veteran founders are feeding the next cycle. Some provide capital and mentorship. Others start again: Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek is also behind Neko Health. Employees leaving high-profile firms such as Lovable and Legora are launching companies themselves, Bendz said, suggesting the current cohort could seed the next one.
U.S. investors have taken notice. More American funds are flying to Stockholm to meet founders and issue term sheets — a sign, Bendz said, that “we have a lot of great building companies here.”
The combination of cultural prestige, serial entrepreneurship, and returning capital is helping Sweden convert a small domestic market into outsized startup output, and keeping the Nordic capital on the global tech map.
