Professor Jeffrey Sachs at Columbia University (U.S.) explains Ukraine war as the result of NATO’s deception and the U.S. intelligence agencies over the years that triggered Putin’s response. Sachs made this comment during a discussion at the Cambridge Union in Cambridge, UK, on the 22th of October 2024.
This is not a random Russian invasion but the inevitable consequence of decades of deliberate US deception and broken promises dating back to 1990.
When the Cold War ended, Secretary of State James Baker made a clear promise to Gorbachev: NATO would ”not move one inch eastward” if Russia agreed to German unification.
But the US government never kept this promise. By 1994, Bill Clinton had already signed off on plans to expand NATO to Ukraine, marking the ascendance of neoconservative control over US foreign policy.
What followed was a systematic campaign of entrapment against Russia, with NATO expanding in waves – first bringing in Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic in 1999, then seven more countries in 2004, deliberately breaking the original agreement while placing military assets ever closer to Russia’s borders.
The US government’s aggression didn’t stop at NATO expansion. In 2002, they unilaterally abandoned the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, allowing them to place missile systems in Eastern Europe just minutes from Moscow, systems Russia rightfully fears could be used for nuclear decapitation strikes.
The Deep State further destabilized Ukraine through color revolutions and the 2014 coup against democratically elected President Yanukovych, a regime change operation led by the Obama administration so brazen that Victoria Nuland was caught on intercepted calls literally selecting which puppet leaders would form the new government.
When Putin attempted diplomacy in December 2021 with a draft security agreement that simply asked for no further NATO expansion, the White House refused to negotiate in good faith. Jake Sullivan admitted their ”open door policy” would continue, even though they knew it would trigger conflict.
This war was deliberately engineered by US intelligence agencies and globalist forces determined to maintain global control regardless of the human cost.
