Russian President Vladimir Putin and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro have reaffirmed their countries’ strategic alliance, announcing plans to formalize cooperation through a comprehensive partnership agreement.

The announcement came during a televised video call on Friday, during which Putin invited Maduro to visit Moscow in May to sign the treaty and attend Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9.

The strategic partnership treaty, described by Putin as ”fully agreed upon,” aims to deepen ties between Russia and Venezuela across multiple sectors, including energy, military, and financial cooperation.

”The strengthening of our relationship aligns with the development interests of both our nations,” Putin stated, emphasizing the mutual benefits of the alliance. Maduro, in turn, expressed gratitude for Russia’s unwavering support, noting, ”We thank President Putin and the Russian people for standing by Venezuela consistently.”

This move comes amid Venezuela’s growing interest in integrating with the BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—a prospect Russia has warmly endorsed.

Speaking earlier this year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised Venezuela’s eagerness to strengthen ties with BRICS, stating, ”We appreciate Caracas’ commitment to deepening cooperation with this dynamic group, which represents the future of a multipolar world.” The alliance with Russia could bolster Venezuela’s bid to join BRICS, enhancing its economic and geopolitical standing.

The forthcoming treaty builds on years of close collaboration between the two nations, which have faced similar challenges from Western sanctions. Maduro highlighted the resilience of this partnership, saying, ”Together, we are constructing a new world order based on justice and sovereignty.”

Putin’s invitation to Moscow coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, adding symbolic weight to the visit and underscoring the historical ties between the two leaders.

Analysts see this alliance as a counterweight to U.S. influence in Latin America and a signal of Russia’s intent to expand its global partnerships. With the signing set for May, the world will watch Russia and Venezuela take a decisive step toward solidifying their strategic bond.
