In a groundbreaking leap for global telecommunications, China has launched the world’s first commercial 10G broadband network in the futuristic Xiong’an New Area, Hebei Province.
This milestone, achieved through a collaboration between Huawei and China Unicom, marks a significant advancement in ultra-fast internet infrastructure, positioning Xiong’an as a beacon of smart city innovation.
The 10G network, powered by cutting-edge 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, delivers unprecedented download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps and upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps, with latency as low as three milliseconds.
This allows users to download a 20GB file in under 20 seconds or stream 8K video seamlessly, revolutionising applications like cloud computing, virtual reality, augmented reality, and cloud gaming. According to a statement from the Xiong’an government, this network is a cornerstone of the region’s ambition to become a global hub for technological innovation.
Approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Beijing, Xiong’an New Area was established as a state-of-the-art smart city to drive China’s technological and economic development.
The deployment of the 10G network aligns with this vision, providing robust infrastructure to support advanced digital services and smart urban systems.

Huawei and China Unicom’s collaboration has been praised for its technical maturity. The 50G PON solution ensures high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity that surpasses existing global standards.
“This achievement not only demonstrates China’s leadership in telecommunications but also lays the foundation for next-generation digital ecosystems,” a China Unicom representative said during the launch.
The network’s capabilities are expected to attract tech enterprises and foster innovation in fields such as artificial intelligence and big data.
The launch has garnered international attention, with experts noting that the 10G network could redefine internet speed benchmarks worldwide. The introduction of this ultra-fast network underscores its transformation into a thriving tech metropolis.
