Vita husets covid-19-rådgivare Anthony Fauci medgav i förra veckan att covid-19-vacciner inte skyddar ”överdrivet bra” mot viruset. En ny studie visar att naturlig immunitet efter en genomgången covid-19-infektion istället ger ett överlägset skydd mot viruset jämfört med vacciner.
Fauci sa till Neil Cavuto på Fox News att covidvaccinerna inte skyddar alltför bra, men han vidhåller ändå att de skyddar ganska bra mot allvarlig sjukdom som leder till sjukhusvistelse och död.
Fauci har en stark tilltro till vacciner och säger att han känner sig säker på att vaccinationerna spelade en viktig roll i att skydda honom från att utveckla en allvarlig form av Covid-19 efter att han vaccinerats mot just Covid-19.
Naturlig immunitet ger ett överlägset skydd
En ny studie från Qatar visar samtidigt att naturlig immunitet hos ovaccinerade, alltså en immunitet förvärvad tack vare en genomgången Covid-19-infektion, ger ett överlägset skydd mot viruset och allvarlig eller dödlig sjukdom jämfört med covidvacciner.
Effektiviteten av primär infektion mot allvarlig, kritisk eller dödlig Covid-19-återinfektion låg på hela 97,3% oavsett covidvariant, meddelar dr Laith Abu-Raddad vid Weill Cornell Medicine i Qatar.
Forskarna noterade också att både naturlig och artificiell immunitet som ges via vacciner avtar med tiden. Trots det hade ovaccinerade personer som tidigare varit smittade med Covid-19, bara hälften så stor risk att drabbas av återinfektion jämfört med de som vaccinerats.
