U.S. Vice President JD Vance delivered a speech at the 61st Munich Security Conference that has been described as both a cultural critique and a political statement, igniting a firestorm of reactions among European leaders.

On February 14, 2025, Vance took the stage to argue that the greatest threats to Europe’s security are not from external actors like Russia or China but from internal issues. He accused European nations of backsliding on democratic values, particularly regarding free speech and migration policies.

His speech was notably devoid of the expected focus on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, instead emphasizing what he termed Europe’s ”retreat from some of its most fundamental values.”

Vance’s message was clear

European leaders must listen to their constituents, embrace free speech, and rethink their approach to immigration. He criticized recent European actions, including the cancellation of Romania’s presidential election due to alleged Russian interference, suggesting that if a democracy can be swayed by digital advertising, its foundation might not be robust.

The vice president’s remarks did not sit well with many in the audience. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius labelled Vance’s critique as ”unacceptable,” arguing that Vance’s comparison of current European democracies to authoritarian regimes was misguided.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Vance of ”trying to pick a fight” with Europe, highlighting the discord between U.S. and European values under the Trump administration.

Vance’s speech also touched on cultural touchpoints, drawing parallels between the endurance of American democracy under the influence of figures like Greta Thunberg and European countries’ potential ”resilience” against the impact of Elon Musk.

His insistence that Europe should not fear its own people’s opinions or suppress the rise of populist parties was met with silence and sparse applause, signalling an incredible reception from an audience unprepared for such a broadside on their democratic practices.

Moreover, Vance did not apologize for his stance, which has been interpreted as an unapologetic endorsement of right-wing populism. His refusal to back down or offer an apology has only deepened the rift, with some seeing it as an extension of the Trump administration’s confrontational foreign policy.

JD Vance comments on X, Feb 17, 2025:

We, Americans, will never apologize for Vice President J.D. Vance speaking the truth that you have abandoned Western culture. We stand by his words, unapologetically. Do you agree that we should never back down from speaking the truth?

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and others defends the continent’s commitment to democracy and free speech, albeit within the legal frameworks that prevent alleged hate speech.

The incident has sparked a discussion about the transatlantic relationship, especially in light of President Donald Trump’s recent interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Vance notably sidestepped in his address.

As the conference continued, the focus shifted to security concerns, particularly Ukraine. Still, Vance’s speech has left a mark, prompting a reevaluation of how Europe and the U.S. navigate their different values and security interests.
