In May 2025, Ukraine escalated its military campaign against Russia through a series of extensive drone and artillery attacks, marking one of the most significant offensives since the conflict began.
These operations targeted multiple regions within Russia, including Moscow, Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk, leading to substantial disruptions in infrastructure and daily life.
Massive Drone Assaults Penetrate Deep into Russian Territory
Between May 19 and May 22, Russia reported intercepting over 700 Ukrainian drones, with 63 targeting the Moscow region alone. These drones, described as ”aircraft-type,” are capable of long-range flights and have been used to strike various targets, causing fires and injuries in cities like Kursk, Yelets, Ryazan, and Oryol.
The attacks led to the temporary closure of major airports and disruptions in mobile internet services across several regions.
Strategic Targets and Psychological Impact
Ukrainian officials have stated that their drone operations are aimed at military and economic facilities that support Russia’s war efforts. Notable incidents include damage to residential buildings in Tula and an industrial fire at the Energia battery plant in Lipetsk.
While the physical destruction is less severe compared to Russia’s missile strikes on Ukraine, the psychological and economic impact of these persistent drone raids has been significant, affecting businesses and public morale.
Artillery Strikes and Border Incursions
In addition to drone attacks, Ukraine has conducted artillery strikes and ground incursions into Russian border regions. The city of Bilopillya in the Sumy region has experienced relentless Russian shelling, leading to civilian casualties and mass evacuations.
Ukrainian forces have also advanced into areas like Tyotkino in the Kursk region, aiming to stretch Russian defences and exploit vulnerabilities.
Russian Response and Ongoing Conflict
In retaliation, Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks on Kyiv, deploying dozens of ballistic missiles and 250 long-range drones, resulting in injuries and significant damage across multiple districts.
Despite these escalations, both nations agreed to a prisoner exchange and have engaged in peace talks, although mutual accusations of insincerity persist.
