Ukraine’s military is grappling with significant losses in its fleet of U.S.-supplied M1 Abrams tanks. Of the 31 delivered, 20 have reportedly been destroyed, largely due to Russia’s advanced anti-tank weaponry, including Kornet missiles, The National Interest writes.
The tanks were considered a key part of Ukraine’s defense strategy, but their vulnerability in combat has become evident.
In response, Ukrainian forces have added steel cages to the tanks, increasing crew protection by up to 35%. However, these makeshift defenses haven’t fully resolved the issue. As the war continues, Ukraine faces challenges in replacing its damaged vehicles and adapting to the battlefield reality of Russian firepower. The losses highlight the limitations of Western-supplied military hardware against modern warfare tactics.
The situation underscores the need for more robust defensive measures as Ukraine continues its defense efforts. While the M1 Abrams tanks were a symbol of international support, their performance under heavy fire has raised concerns about the sustainability of Ukraine’s armored forces.
