NATO sees no direct or imminent threat from Russia, according to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. NATO does not want the situation in Ukraine to escalate into a full-scale war with Russia.
”We see no direct or imminent threat to any NATO ally. Therefore, we are of course closely following what Russia is doing,” Stoltenberg responded to a question during a NATO conference on 23 January 2024. ”We have increased our vigilance and our presence in the eastern part of the Alliance,” Stoltenberg added.
”Then we don’t see any direct or imminent threat against any NATO Ally. And therefore, we, of course, monitor closely what Russia does, we have increased our vigilance, our presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, but the whole idea of that is to prevent an attack on a NATO Ally.”
According to Jens Stoltenberg, NATO set two goals after the launch of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. The first goal was to ”support Ukraine” and the second was to prevent the conflict from ”escalating into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO”, writes TASS.
