Future Norvegian Bank Executive and current NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wants Swedes to be prepared to sacrifice their lives in a war against Russia, but Swedes are becoming increasingly skeptical of NATO. According to a survey between July and November 2023, support for NATO has dropped from 65% to 57%.
On January 31, 2024, Ginna Lindberg from Swedish State Radio (SR.se) interviewed NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg. He says that Sweden’s first task as a NATO member will be to help prevent Putin from winning the war in Ukraine, according to SR.
”Stoltenberg says he expects Sweden to join NATO within a few weeks, and that he has received assurances from the Hungarian prime minister that Hungary will vote yes shortly after the Hungarian parliament convenes at the end of February. The Swedish application period has historically been short” – SR.se
Jens Stoltenberg’s statement on the need to involve Swedes in a war against Russia comes just a week after Stoltenberg publicly stated that NATO does not see a direct or imminent threat from Russia.
NATO also does not want the situation in Ukraine to escalate into a full-scale war with Russia, according to an earlier statement.
”We see no direct or imminent threat to any NATO ally. Therefore, we are of course closely following what Russia is doing,” Stoltenberg responded to a question during a press conference on January 23, 2024.
Despite intense appeals from the government, senior politicians and senior government officials such as the Swedish Commander-in-Chief (Micael Bydén), about the importance of NATO membership to ensure our national security, the trend among people seems to be to become more hesitant about Swedish NATO membership.

In Ukraine, the supply of foot soldiers has been greatly reduced after heavy losses in the war against Russia.
Many media have previously reported on the desperation in US-ruled Ukraine to find new soldiers to replace those killed in action. Ukraine’s military leadership is recruiting young, old and even pregnant women for combat. Now is the time for Swedes to join this war, suggests future Riksbank Governor Jens Stoltenberg.
