David N. Gibbs: There is a parallel with Afghanistan and how the US dragged Russia into the Ukraine war

Professor David N. Gibbs

On October 17, 2024, American professor of history David N. Gibbs visited Stockholm. He lectured on the US’s expansive foreign policy and emerging militarism.

Gibbs’ speech was based on his new book, ”Revolt of the Rich. How the Politics of the 1970s Widened America’s Class Divide,“ which discusses the revolt of the rich and how the politics of the 1970s widened America’s class divide.

David N. Gibbs examined the international threads in his latest book, comparing the 1979-1989 war in Afghanistan to the globally significant conflict currently raging in Ukraine.

Gibbs analyzes the massive increase in economic inequality in the United States, which has accelerated from the 1980s until today. Gibbs shows us the political roots of this development.

Gibbs is recognized for his rigorous handling of sources and patient digging, which has earned him a reputation as one of the truly great American historians of modern times.

Like a few others, David N. Gibbs also manages to put his findings in a contemporary political context, as in his breakthrough work on the wars in the former Yugoslavia, ’First Do No Harm. Humanitarian Intervention and the Destruction of Yugoslavia”, from 2009.

David N. Gibbs notes that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was deliberately provoked. He now sees a parallel with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
