The US news channel CNN hit a record low in ratings at the weekend. This is another sign of the difficulties faced by incoming boss Mark Thompson, according to the New York Post.

It was the demographic figures for the 25-54 age group that hit rock bottom, according to the latest Nielsen data released on Tuesday. Viewership totaled just 55,000 viewers for this weekend’s program including names like Anderson Cooper.

CNN was launched in 1980 and the administration describes the channel as ”the most trusted name in news”. The ranking is the network’s worst since 1991 – when it began measuring digitized TV data.

CNN’s overall ratings were not much better. The network only logged a total of 345,000 viewers, compared to Fox News with 683,000 viewers and MSNBC with 424,000 viewers.

”CNN is a ratings disgrace,” said one industry insider.

Mark Thompson, the former CEO of the New York Times Company, was appointed as CNN’s new chairman and CEO last month by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery after Chris Licht’s disastrous tenure, the New York Post continues.

Tucker Carlson, who was fired for political reasons from Fox News, took to Twitter (X) where he is able to attract over 200 million viewers per story on his own, without financial compensation and without advertising support from X. Tucker’s story on Argentina had 418 million views.

This shows the power of social media’s reach and it’s popular appreciation.
