The people of North Carolina are crying for the government’s FEMA help. Still, they are getting almost no or too little help the first week after the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene, which pounded North Carolina from September 27-29, 2024.
The death toll from the North Carolina Flooding has by October 5 risen to at least 227 across six states, according to CNN. Hurricane Helene is the second-deadliest hurricane to strike the United States mainland in the past 50 years, following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Citizens of North Carolina say that FEMA spent too much money to help illegal migrants, and the government sent too much taxpayer money to support Ukraine instead. FEMA responds that there are just rumors on social media that their response is failing. The response is echoed in big media, claiming a FEMA failure is just right-wing propaganda.
The US government has suggested 750 US dollars per citizen as a first relief effort for the hurricane victims.
Citizens of North Carolina warn that they may also fall victim to land grabs, such as what happened in Lahaina, Maui, in August 2023 after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century. According to Maui County officials, the fire claimed 102 lives and leveled the historic town of Lahaina.
