The Swedish government writes in a press release that the European Council meeting in Brussels on 14-15 December took the ”historic decision” to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson attended the EU summit.
”We have now agreed in the European Council to open negotiations on the future EU membership of Ukraine and Moldova. This is an important political signal that their long-term place is in the EU.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, ” It is very gratifying that we can give this message to President Zelenskyj and the Ukrainian people, who are now fighting for their and our freedom. ”
The leaders decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, grant Georgia candidate country status subject to certain measures, and open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina as soon as it meets the necessary criteria for membership.
