The Polish newspaper TVP World reveals that the Swedish Defence Minister has promised to send “air defence equipment and aircraft” to Poland after Russian drones violated Polish airspace.

According to RT, the Russian Armed Forces state that they have not attacked Poland and that they have no reason to do so. Russia is not at war with Poland. The Russian military has therefore proposed consultations with the Polish military after being accused by Warsaw of violating Polish airspace.

The Ministry of Defense in Moscow states that the aircraft or drones that crossed the border did not take off from Russia.

There is speculation that NATO used electronic warfare during the ongoing military exercise Iron Defender 25 in Poland to take command of the Russian aircraft. Iron Defender 25 began on August 24 and will continue until the end of September with over 30,000 Polish soldiers. The exercise includes cyber warfare exercises.

NewsVoice has previously reported that Iran succeeded in taking down an American drone through cyber warfare. On December 4, 2011, Iran succeeded in hacking into a Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel drone without damaging it. CNN subsequently wrote that Iran claims to have built a replica and that Barack Obama asked for Iran to return it.

Poland’s Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz told TVP World that the Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson promised additional support to Poland, including air defence equipment and aircraft.

”Poland’s defense minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said his Swedish counterpart had also contacted him about the urgent delivery of further support for Poland, including air defense equipment and aircraft. ”

What aircraft are we talking about?

The Swedish Armed Forces wrote in April 2025 that two Swedish Jas 39 Gripen aircraft had carried out live missions in Poland as part of Enhanced Air Policing, NATO’s reinforced incident response capability. The fighter jets made a visual identification of a Russian IL-20 Coot signals intelligence aircraft.

Pål Jonson confirms partly on X on the 10th of September:

Russia’s violations of Polish airspace last night are unacceptable. I have contacted my colleague @KosiniakKamysz to underline that Sweden stands in full solidarity with Poland. Our support for Poland is firm and NATO and EU security depend on it.

However, Jonson does not specify how Sweden will support Poland. Still, according to TVP World, it involves aircraft, and the only Swedish aircraft capable of shooting down drones are likely to be JAS Gripen. It is hardly likely that Swedish aircraft will be used solely to ”watch” Russian drones (editor’s note).
